The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is offering two free Citizen Firearms Education classes to eligible Sarasota County residents on Friday, January 23rd and Friday, January 30th. This class will be conducted by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Training Staff from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Gun Range.
 
Eligible applicants must submit to (and complete) a background investigation conducted by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO). Applicants will be contacted in the order of the responses received (until the class is full) by an SCSO Training Staff member to confirm a spot – please do not call the sheriff’s office to inquire on status or availability. 

In order to be considered for eligibility, applicants must:
  • Be a permanent Sarasota County resident
  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Possess a valid FL driver’s license or government ID
  • Be able to pass an SCSO background check
  • Bring your own firearm, 2 magazines and a holster 
9mm ammunition will be provided for students using a 9mm firearm. Students using other caliber firearms will be required to bring their own ammunition. (150 rounds of ammunition will be required for the class).
 
This course is designed for handguns only, no long guns will be permitted.
 
This class is intended for those who are new to firearms and are looking for a course to help build fundamental knowledge on firearm safety.

**Please note, there is a limit of 10 participants per class. Additional applicants will be placed on a standby list. Registration does not guarantee a spot in the class.
