Man Charged in Sarasota Shooting

NEWS RELEASE 18-012 - JANUARY 22, 2018
Bailey, Charles

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office arrested 33-year-old Charles Dailey in connection with a shooting that occurred Friday near 17th Street and Lockwood Ridge Road in Sarasota.

Deputies were initially called around 6:00 a.m., after receiving a report that the suspect fired multiple shots into the victim’s vehicle, before fleeing northbound on Lockwood Ridge Road. The sheriff’s office immediately gathered surveillance video and released it to the public. Based on statements made by the 31-year-old male victim and surveillance video from his place of employment, detectives determined Dailey was a likely suspect due to an altercation the two had on Monday, January 15. Video surveillance from Washington Food Mart located at 1702 N. Washington Blvd., shows Dailey in a verbal altercation with the victim before driving away in a car identical to what was reported Friday morning. The victim explained the dispute stemmed from an incident that happened more than a year ago involving a female acquaintance.

Late Friday night, Tactical Unit deputies and SWAT team members executed a search warrant at Dailey’s home where detectives recovered two rifles, a shotgun, ammunition, and clothing consistent with what was worn by the shooter Friday morning. Detectives also recovered a spent .45 caliber shell casing in Dailey’s vehicle, matching what was fired during the shooting.

On Monday just before noon, Dailey turned himself into the Sarasota County Jail where he is being held on a single count of Attempted Murder and $250,000 bond. Dailey has two prior arrests in Sarasota County including a 2012 arrest for Homicide and a 2007 arrest for Aggravated Battery on a Pregnant Woman and Aggravated Assault with a Firearm. The investigation is ongoing.
