Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight today promoted Deputy Arik Smith to Sergeant.

Smith began his career in public service as an Emergency Medical Technician in both Illinois and Florida. In 2006, he earned his law enforcement certification and joined the sheriff’s office as a deputy assigned to the Patrol Bureau. Over the course of his career, Smith worked in the agency’s Tactical Unit and Special Investigations Section. He earned several certifications through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in areas including crisis intervention, laser and speed measurement, and advanced narcotics and dangerous drug investigations. Smith has received the Combat Cross award, a Unit Citation award and several letters of commendation from partnering agencies and citizens alike.

“This is a great day for our agency and our community,” said Sheriff Tom Knight. “Sgt. Smith is a leader among his peers who is well respected and admired for his dedication to public service. I have no doubt the Sarasota County community will benefit from his new and well-earned position of leadership.”
