Ex-Employee Robs Sarasota Gas Station

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested a man for Armed Robbery after he robbed the Shell gas station where he used to work.

Deputies responded to 5100 Fruitville Road, early Friday morning at approximately 1:00 a.m., for reports of an Armed Robbery. Surveillance video obtained from the business captured the suspect enter the store with a long-barreled handgun and go behind the counter where he entered a touchscreen register and stole more than $270 in cash. According to the clerk, she immediately recognized the suspect's voice and identified him as her former coworker, 33-year-old Joshua Ruiz, of Sarasota. Further investigation revealed the weapon used during the robbery was a pellet gun that Ruiz stole from his roommate.

Ruiz, DOB 12/21/82, of 4421 N. Lake Drive, is charged with Armed Robbery. He is currently being held at the Sarasota County Jail on $100,000 bond.
